Vietnam is a beautiful country with ever-changing landscapes, from the mountains in the north to the beaches in the south. Not only that, but Vietnam's unique culture, as well as the mouthwatering cuisine of each province, add to the country's charm.
We've been fortunate to call Vietnam home for the last four years and have traveled widely, yet we still feel like we've only scratched the surface. There are simply too many incredible places to discover.
That's why deciding on the most beautiful places in Vietnam is very challenging!
However, here is a list of our favorites that we’ve personally visited. It has a range of unforgettable sights, from bustling cities to endless rice fields, mountains, caves and lakes!
We’ve also included the best time to visit, where to stay, and a popular tour you can book in each destination.
1. Pu Luong Nature Reserve
When to Visit: March to May or September to November

For an escape to nature, head to Pu Luong Nature Reserve, located just 4 hours away from Hanoi.
Apart from the stunning scenery, what we loved best about Pu Luong was its laid-back atmosphere. We had a great time staying at a traditional homestay in the middle of the rice fields.
There are plenty of activities, from enjoying the terraced rice fields to trekking and visiting caves and waterfalls! If all of these gorgeous views and activities aren't enough, you can also relax in one of the many ethnic villages scattered around the mountainside.

2. Cao Bang
When to Visit: October to April
Where to Stay: Minh Khang Homestay
Popular Tour: Hanoi - Cao Bang - Ban Gioc Waterfall
If you’re looking for an off the beaten path, Cao Bang should be on your list. Situated in Vietnam's northeast, the Cao Bang province is home to UNESCO Geopark, remote villages, and breathtaking mountainous scenery!
Cao Bang is home to one of Vietnam’s famous landmarks - the Ban Gioc Waterfall. If you want a slightly more adventurous activity, you can camp at Nui Thung, also known as the Angel Eye Mountain.
Alternatively, you can visit Phia Thap village, one of Vietnam's few remaining incense villages where incense is still produced entirely by hand.
Going on a motorbike tour with a local and seeing some of the greatest natural wonders of Vietnam is the best way to experience the province.

3. Phong Nha
When to Visit: January to August

There’s much beauty waiting for you to discover in Phong Nha Ke Bang, the adventure capital of Vietnam. Not only is Phong Nha home to Son Doong cave, the biggest cave system in the world, but there are also many other caves you can explore.
There are many tours available, so you can decide whether you want to go on an expedition or just spend the day exploring a cave.

4. Tu Le
When to Visit: May to October

Known for its flavorful sticky rice, Tu Le is another location you shouldn’t miss when in Vietnam. It is located in Yen Bai province and about 5 hours away from Hanoi. Apart from Tu Le's remoteness and beautiful location, staying at a local Tai homestay is our favorite!
The homestay is located in a small village in the middle of the rice fields and serves an abundant meal prepared by the family. There are hiking options available nearby, and you can end the night swimming in the hot spring.

5. Hoi An
When to Visit: December to March

Hoi An is a popular tourist spot in Vietnam that you shouldn’t miss. It is also one of the most picturesque destinations in Vietnam, thanks to the golden facade of the old town and the colorful lanterns hanging in the streets.
Apart from the old town itself, the surrounding countryside is also worth seeing. Rent a bike and drive around to discover more of the local area.

6. Ba Be Lake

Ba Be Lake is one of the most serene places you can visit in Northern Vietnam. It is the largest freshwater lake in Vietnam, surrounded by karst cliffs and the national park's lush forest.

7. Ha Giang

If you haven’t heard of Ha Giang before, then you’re missing out!
From towering mountain views to remote mountain villages and ethnic minorities, Ha Giang is one of the best destinations we’ve visited in Vietnam.
We've taken numerous motorbike trips in Ha Giang, from the more popular Ha Giang Loop to other more remote parts of the province. Every trip has been unique and unforgettable, letting us fully experience the area's amazing scenery and culture. One of our personal favorites is staying at the Black H’mong village in Lao Xa.
We recommend going on a private tour so you can beat the crowds and go at your own pace and schedule. Visiting local markets like the Sunday Meo Vac Market and the Pho Cao Tribal Market in Dong Van District are among our top recommendations.

8. Hue

In addition, Hue City is also famous for its stunning Perfume River, which adds to the city's charm and beauty. You can take a boat ride along the river and admire the picturesque scenery.

9. Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is one of the best tourist attractions of Vietnam you have to visit! Apart from the beautiful views of karst mountains and rice fields, there are plenty of things to do in Ninh Binh. That’s why we recommend staying at least 2 days instead of a day trip from Hanoi.
We recommend taking a boat ride in Tam Coc or at Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex for the best views of Ninh Binh. The sampan boat will take you across calm waters while you gaze out at the towering cliffs and a series of underwater caves.
You can also hike to the Hang Mua Cave Viewpoint. It offers a rewarding experience as you climb up the steep stairs to reach the top, where you can capture breathtaking views of the Ninh Binh's natural beauty.

10. Moc Chau
When to Visit: November to December

11. Ha Long Bay

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is regarded as one of the most famous places in Vietnam. From the limestone formations to the emerald green waters, Ha Long Bay offers impressive views, which we can attest to. It’s breathtaking!
There are a few ways to see Halong Bay, but the most popular option is to board a cruise. With so many cruise ships to choose from, we highly recommend going with Peony Cruise. They offer modern amenities as well as activities such as kayaking, octopus fishing, and cooking classes on board.

12. Mu Cang Chai

Mu Cang Chai is a photographer's dream destination because of its expansive rice terraces. In the months leading up to the harvest, you can see the rice paddies turn a brilliant yellow.
Another great time to visit Mu Cang Chai is when the rice fields are flooded during the water season, which turns the landscape into a massive mirror.
Apart from trekking activities, staying in a local homestay that offers a breathtaking view of the rice fields is another experience when visiting Mu Cang Chai!

13. Hanoi

14. Con Dao Islands

It is smaller and less well-known than Phu Quoc Island on Vietnam's southern coast, yet it is equally beautiful.There are numerous things to do on the island, from learning about its tragic history to driving around and admiring the incredible views of the coast line. The Con Dao Islands is a destination that’s well worth the trip.

15. Ngoc Chien

Ngoc Chien is a hidden gem in Northwest Vietnam boasting picturesque landscapes, lush greenery, and serene valleys. It is close to Mu Cang Chai but is lesser known, so you’ll experience a more peaceful stay. There aren’t many homestays in the area, so we recommend booking your stay in advance.

16. An Giang
When to Visit: March to May

If you’re looking for something more off the beaten path, head to the An Giang Province located in the Southern Region of Vietnam. Because of its proximity to the Cambodian border, An Giang Province is home to some of Vietnam's most stunning temples and pagodas.
Admire the endless rice fields in Tri Ton or experience the local floating market in Long Xuyen. If you’re looking for more activities, head to the Tra Su Cajuput forest and discover different bird species.
If all these gorgeous views and activities aren’t enough, you can also visit a local mat village in Long Xuyen and learn about the craftsmanship that has been passed down from generation to generation.

17. Ta Xua
When to Visit: November to March

Known as “the paradise in the clouds,” Ta Xua is one of the most visited attractions in Vietnam. A popular attraction includes hiking Ta Xua Peak, also referred to as the dinosaur spine. This is one of the best places to witness the sea of clouds.
Cloud hunting in Ta Xua requires a lot of luck, patience, and good weather conditions. We visited twice; unfortunately, the weather was too cloudy on both occasions.
Despite this, we still think Ta Xua is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam as the drive alone is unbelievable. You’ll be rewarded with never-ending panoramic views of the mountain ranges in the Son La Province.

18. Dalat
When to Visit: November to March

Dalat is a cozy mountain city and one of the best places to visit in Vietnam. It boasts excellent coffee, tea plantations, waterfalls, and mouth-watering food!
It is the best place to experience the coffee culture in Vietnam with many coffee shops in Dalat offering views of hills and pine forests. Once you get your coffee fix, visit one of the most detailed pagodas we’ve seen in Vietnam - Linh Phuoc Pagoda.
If you want a slightly more adventurous activity, you can try canyoning or cloud hunting, both are very popular activities in Dalat.

19. Ho Chi Minh City
