For your first day in Ninh Binh, spend your time visiting the most popular attractions around the Tam Coc area. Some of the attractions are quite a distance to each other, so we highly recommend renting a motorbike to explore.

1. Watch the Sunrise at Hang Mua Viewpoint

Entrance: 100,000 VND (4 USD)

Opening Hours: 6am to 7pm daily

Start your day early as you watch the sunrise at the Hang Mua viewpoint. Climb the 500 steps for one of the best panoramic views of Ninh Binh. We recommend starting as early as you can to avoid the heat and the tour crowds from Hanoi.

Also, be careful of your steps if you decide to climb up to the dragon viewpoint because of the sharp rocks and lack of railings.

Tip: Avoid the common parking scam and park your bike next to the ticket counter for less than 1 USD

About 7km away from Hang Mua, you will find Bich Dong Pagoda, one of the most iconic places to visit in the Tam Coc area. This ancient Buddhist temple is known for its distinct architectural style and the small bridge that leads you to the temple's gate. You can also climb up the steps to get to the small cave.

If you’re looking to visit more pagodas, then head to Bai Dinh Pagoda about 24km away from Bich Dong Pagoda. It’s a bit of a drive, but the road to the pagoda is beautiful.

The Bai Dinh Pagoda is the largest Buddhist complex in Southeast Asia. It is made up of beautiful temples that are well-maintained, some of which overlook the valleys. Remember to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

If you visit during the hot summer months, we recommend going later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. While it’s free to enter the pagoda complex, you will have to walk far to get to the pagodas from the gate. You can take the electric car, which costs about 3 USD for two ways.

Opening Hours: 7am to 7pm

The Tuyet Tinh Coc, also known as Am Tien Cave Pagoda, is located within the Hoa Lu Ancient Citadel. To get to the entrance, you’ll have to go through a tunnel where you’ll be greeted by the large Ao Giai lake.

4. Drive Around the Countryside

Driving around Ninh Binh without a specific destination is one of the best things you can do. In the afternoon, get your bikes and get lost on the small roads that lead through the beautiful rice paddies and stop to greet the locals working in the fields.

This will provide you with a one-of-a-kind and authentic experience as you venture out and enjoy the breathtaking scenery that Ninh Binh has to offer.

Visit Van Long Nature Reserve

Entrance: 70,000 VND (3 USD)

Opening Hours: 8am to 6pm

Best Time to Visit Ninh Binh

You can visit Ninh Binh at any time of year, but the best time depends on what you want to see and do.

Where to Stay

There are two main areas to stay in when in Ninh Binh: Trang An and Tam Coc. Stay in the Trang An area if you’re looking for a more quiet place in the middle of rice fields. If you prefer to stay somewhere within walking distance of restaurants, stay within Tam Coc. Find all accommodations in Ninh Binh here!

How to Get Around

Renting a motorbike from your homestay is the best way to get around Ninh Binh. It's the most convenient way to get to more attractions and explore more. Depending on the type of motorbike you rent, you can expect to pay around 7 USD per day.

If you cannot ride, you can also rent a bicycle from your accommodation for free, but it can be tiring as some attractions are far from each other. Also, not the best way to get around especially in the hot summer months!

You can book a car through the Grab app. However, in our experience, cars were not readily available, and finding a driver took a long time.

Tip: Arrange a driver with your accommodation for faster service. One way fare around Tam Coc and Trang An area cost around 4 USD
